America! America!
God shed His grace on thee!
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw
Confirm thy soul in self-control
Thy liberty in law!
Psalm 60:1-3
O God, Thou hast cast us off, Thou hast scattered us, Thou hast been displeased; O turn Thyself to us again. Thou hast made the earth to tremble; Thou hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh. Thou hast shewed Thy people hard things: Thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.
Prayer
Sovereign God, how You did shed Your grace on us. Indeed, we were born out of Your grace and mercy. Courageous and virtuous individuals, hand-picked by You, dear Providence, labored assiduously, asking Your blessing upon the fruit of their labors. Such a land of freedom and bravery! How quickly we flourished under Your guidance and their leadership. How we sought to do good and to be good, all the while acknowledging how imperfect we were and how we needed You. How we have even been willing to contend with one another for righteous causes. How we became great, and grateful to be generous to those less fortunate.
O God, You filled our hands with richness and abundance. You taught us to hold our hands tightly, guarding Your blessings with thankfulness. Yet, we have chosen to let it all slip through our fingers, at first slowly, and now surely. We have traded resilience, restraint, and self-governance for reliance, laziness, and angry outbursts. Indeed, as has been the case since the Garden, what is evil is being called good. And, now, Lord, what is good is blatantly being called evil. We have no one to blame but ourselves for losing the precious life that we once had.
O God! Only You can redeem us from our self-imposed wretched state! Hear the cries of Your people!
Psalm 60:4-5
Thou hast given a banner to them that fear Thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah. That Thy beloved may be delivered; save with Thy right hand, and hear me.
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!
Psalm 60:11-12
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. Through God we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies.
Prayer
Indeed, Lord, from the North to the South, and from the East to the West, restore. From sea to shining sea, restore. From our enemies from within and from those beyond our borders, restore. We plead Your underserved mercy. What we have done to ourselves, we cannot undo without Your help. Rescue us for Your Namesake. Remember us, O Lord. Hear the cries of Your repentant people, few though we may now be. Remember the remnant. Increase our numbers. Awake the sleeping. Spirit of the Living God, move mightily across our land. May this be the day of salvation for many. Our hope is in You, Almighty God.
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy purest jubilee!
(The original words written in this last line were, "Thy whiter jubilee!" I have taken the liberty to exchange the word "whiter" for the synonym "purest.")
